There is no legislation specifically directed at the protection, or monitoring, of animals used in research in South Africa!
The Legislation Falls Under The Animal Protection Act 72 Of 1962, Which Is Inadequate For This Purpose.
The introduction of laws to regulate the use of laboratory animals has been deferred since 1962 and in 2009 there is still no sign of such legislation being promulgated.
The only so-called “protection” for lab animals came in 1990 when, after an investigation into the treatment of experimental animals, a committee comprised of representatives from the government, medical researchers, universities, research groups, and animal welfare societies, was formed to draft a national code which was published in 1990, but was voluntarily adhered to and had no legal standing.
In 2001 Standards South Africa, a division of the S.A. Bureau of Standards, was asked to draft a new set of recommendations for the use of laboratory animals and this resulted in The South African National Standard – The Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, being published (Obtainable from Standards Sales Dept www.sabs.co.za ). The new Standard replaces the previous code and is intended to be attached to the Animal Protection Act as a point of reference and to form the basis of any future legislation, but in the meantime, it too will only be voluntarily adhered to.

The Amazon Warrior Project
Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary in Plettenberg Bay is the World’s first free-roaming primate sanctuary for monkeys, lemurs and apes mainly rescued from horrific circumstances like vivisection, laboratories, the animal trade, and dodgy zoos.
These animals now live in the Monkeyland forest, some are the 10th generation free born progeny of those original rescues.
In essence “Amazon 2” revolves around one fundamental principal “land ownership for the animals”. Because the animals do not currently own the land they live on, they have no guarantee of a home going forward, the land could easily be sold out from under them, and they would be in the same predicament as they were before they were rescued.
Yes! We are talking about the first ever real-estate deal where the animals own the land – History in the making!
In a landmark deal designed by Fluxman Attorneys and Mazar Auditors complete with changes to the Title Deeds conditions of the land, the sanctuary owners have agreed to sell the land to the animals that live on it, to guarantee that this forested land can never be taken away from them.

How do you become a “Amazon Warrior” in this land for Animals campaign?
The monkeys, lemurs and apes don’t have the money to buy the land themselves, that’s where you come in as an Amazon Warrior, you can help the animals by making tax-deductible donations to assist the animals own the land.
Every donation:
Is a step forward in securing their future, and by precedence, the future of millions of other similar animals around the World when others follow this precedence.
Keep the animals from pain and suffering by moving them that much closer to owning the land.
Give them their own asset that they can use as collateral for their own security and benefit should such a situation ever arise.
Sets a future precedence in animal welfare, there is no greater gift than ownership.
